THE GREATER HINGGAN MOUNTAIN -A GREEN TREASURE
HOUSE
    Lying in the northern border areas,the forest 
forest area of the Greater Hinggan Mountains is at
 "the comb of the golden cock and the head of the 
swan",adjacent to the undulating Lesser Hinggan Mo
untains in the cast,bordered by the Hulun Boir Pra
irie in the west ,and by the fertile Songnen Plain
in the south ,and faces Russin across the Heilong 
River,With chains of mountains and a vast expanse 
of forest,it enjoys the name the "green gem at the
 comb of the golden cock."
    In spring ,the Greater Hinggan Mountains are c
overed  with beautiful azaleas;in summer,the lush 
forests are ideal summer resorts;in autumn,the for
ests are clolrful with green trees,fragrant fruit 
and blossoms in five colors,-red,white,yellow,brow
n and green;in winter,the area is full of poetic f
lavor while the evergreen pine trees set off the w
hite world of ice and snow.
    In the vast Greater Hinggan Mountains live mor
e that 400 species of rare birds and animals,such 
as red deer,reindeer,moose,sika,brown bears,sables
pheasants,hazel heans,swans,snow hares and musk de
er.It is one of the best natural hnunting  grounds
in China.Among numerous ranges and valleys run mor
e than 20 rivers in various sizes,such as the Ganh
e,Duobukuer,Naduli,Huma and Ermu Rivers,The rivers
teem with cold
water fish of rare species,such as sturgeon,huso s
turgeon and fine-scaled fish.The source of the Hei
long River is formed by the Shileka River grow gre
en pines and cypress trees, which are agains the b
ackground of dangerous shoals and rapids,thus form
ing extremely scenery.Traveling along the river,to
urists may find the ruins of the Ancient City Isla
nd where a battle between China and Russia was onc
e fought,and may havea view of Russian landscape a
cross the river.The "North Pole VEillage of China"
in Mohe is a unique scenic wonder whter"white nigh
t"appears around the Summer Solstice every year .M
ohe is also the only place in China for people to 
view the aurora(or Northern Lights).
    The Huzhong Nature Reserve,a national frigid-t
emperate-zone nature reserve at the highteset of t
he Greater Hinggan Mountains,is a mystery with an 
elegant chain of mountains,towering ancient trees,
deep gorges and quiet valleys.As a primitive fores
ts it has its special graceful bearing,and is inha
bited by a large number of rare birds,animals and 
fish.
    Forty-five kilometers west of Jiahedaqi,a metr
opolis of forests,lies Gaxian Cave.There are many 
beautiful tales about the cave.IN THE cave,the rui
ns of a stone cave can be found where ancestors of
the Xianbeis,an ancient ethnic minority,lived,in a
ddition to a stone tablet with the inscription by 
an emperor of the Northern Wei Dynasty(386-534).Th
e Xianbei who moved to the south and founded the N
orthern Wei Dynasty made great contributions to th
e unity of all ethnic groups and to the unificatio
n of China.The natural scenery and mysterious hist
ory of Gaxian Cave have attracted a large number o
f Chinese and foreign visitors and scholars.
    As a matter of fact the Oroqens are the offspr
ing of the Xianbeis who did not move to the south.
The Oroqens are good at riding,shooting ,singing a
nd dancing,and their ethnic songs,dances and custo
ms are well-known in China and in the world as wel
l.Dancing with the Oroqens below the cave and besi
de the bonfire,eating mutton with hands and living

in their tents will help tourists understand their
unique customs well.
    The Greater Hinggan mountains warmly welcome b
